WASHINGTON, D.C./NEW YORK -- The Radio Show, the largest annual event for the radio industry, announced today that Clear Channel Chairman and CEO Bob Pittman and CBS Radio CEO and President Dan Mason will headline the 2014 Radio Show Super Session titled "From the Control Room to the Board Room," to be held September 11 at 9:15 a.m. The Radio Show, produced by the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), will be held September 10-12 in Indianapolis.
Mason and Pittman, who both got their start in Radio as disc jockeys, now oversee two of the top radio and media companies. The session, moderated by NAB Executive Vice President of Radio John David, will explore how their early careers influence current leadership and programming decisions. The interactive discussion will include both traditional Radio and new platforms.
Bob Pittman is Chairman and CEO of Clear Channel, a leading global media, digital and entertainment company. Clear Channel includes Clear Channel Media & Entertainment, which owns 850 radio stations across America, and the iHeartRadio digital radio platform – the No. 1 all-in-one digital audio service. He began his career as a radio announcer in his native Mississippi before going on to successfully program a number of stations, including WNBC in New York. He also led the team which founded MTV, was CEO of MTV Networks, AOL Networks, Six Flags Theme Parks, Quantum Media, Century 21 Real Estate and Time Warner Enterprises, and COO of America Online Inc. and AOL Time Warner.
Pittman has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and received an International Radio and Television Society Gold Medal and AdWeek's first Media Visionary award. He was recognized in Life magazine's "Five Original Thinkers of the '80s," Advertising Age's "50 Pioneers and Visionaries of TV" and "10 Marketers Who Changed American Culture," and was at the top of Radio Ink's "Most Powerful People in Radio" list.
Dan Mason, who started on the radio in his native Kentucky, oversees CBS Radio's 126 stations in 27 markets and has diversified the division's portfolio through a combination of over-the-air and digital initiatives. An experienced radio programmer, Mason has initiated an aggressive growth strategy at CBS Radio, including the launch of new formats at more than two dozen stations across the country; the purchase of FM stations in New York and Washington, D.C.; the creation of CBS Sports Radio, a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week lineup of national programming from premier entities CBS RADIO and CBS Sports. Restoring WCBS-FM to its classic hits format solidified its position as an undisputable ratings leader that consistently ranks among the most popular stations with listeners of all ages in New York.
Under Mason's leadership, CBS Radio has taken a variety of steps to increase its digital presence, including building an online audio streaming platform, creating mobile applications that allow listeners to interact with CBS Radio on the go, and expanding its use of online video to complement the division's over-the-air programming.
During his first tenure as CBS Radio President from 1995-2002, Mason successfully integrated the original CBS, Group W, Infinity Radio and American Radio Systems stations, among the top U.S. radio broadcasting groups, by merging operations, blending business styles and increasing profitability.
Mason was named Radio Ink "Executive of the Year" in 2010 and received NAB's National Radio Award in 2012. He regularly appears on Radio Ink's "Most Powerful People in Radio" list and Billboard's Power 100. Mason serves as a member of the Board of the Academy of Country Music, as well as on the Board of Directors for The Broadcasters Foundation of America, which recently honored him with a Ward L. Quaal Leadership Award. In October 2010, Mason was graced with the Ralph Gabbard Distinguished Kentuckian Award in recognition of his achievements in broadcasting.
