2009 Radio Mercury Awards Call for Entries Now Open
New $10,000 Integrated Radio Campaign Award
The call for entries to the 2009 Radio Mercury Awards (RMA) begins today in a competition for a total of $140,000 in cash prizes, to be awarded on June 17th in New York City. One outstanding commercial will break through to win the coveted $100,000 Grand Prize.
The RMA’s are calling on the creative community to submit ground-breaking work that harnesses the power of radio to engage consumers and develop meaningful brand connections. Radio Mercury Awards judges will be looking for commercials that move beyond traditionally accepted rules and push the envelope in the use of words and sound to evoke personal images that generate emotional responses to a brand’s message.
"Real innovation requires risk-taking and a willingness to embrace new ideas," stated Rick Boyko, Director of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Brandcenter and former co-president and chief creative officer of Ogilvy & Mather, North America who will serve as Chief Judge for the 2009 Radio Mercury Awards. "Smart creative that forces us to look at the medium in a different way is the key. We're looking for the spots that showcase where radio is headed."
In addition to Rick Boyko, the final round judges to date include Alex Bogusky of Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Bill Bruce of BBDO New York, Pete Favat of Arnold Worldwide, David Fowler of Ogilvy & Mather, Jeff Goodby of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, Mark Gross of DDB Chicago, Mark Nardi of Hill | Holliday, Bob Scarpelli of DDB Worldwide, and Joyce King Thomas of McCann Erickson.
The effective use of radio creative as an essential component in a multi-media advertising campaign will be recognized with the debut of the $10,000 Integrated Radio Campaign Award.
“We are promoting new thinking in radio advertising,” observed Jeff Haley, President and Chief Executive Officer, Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) and Co-Chair of the Radio Creative Fund (RCF). “The ongoing advancements of audio entertainment, information and advertising is emblematic of what we see taking place in the creative arena. We’re excited about the creative community’s ongoing involvement in the evolution of radio.”
In addition to the $10,000 Integrated Radio Campaign Award and the $100,000 Grand Prize, the 2009 Radio Mercury competition includes: five $5,000 prizes -- two for the Agency/Production Company Category, and one each for Political, Radio Station-Produced and Spanish-Language Categories; a $2,500 Student-Produced Category Award; and a $2,500 donation to the PSA winner’s charity of choice. Entry deadline to the 2009 Radio Mercury Awards competition is March 20, 2009. Complete details, rules, and entry fees are available at www.RadioMercuryAwards.com or by calling 212-681-7207.
