Consumer Electronics Show All About Connectivity

The 2012 International CES has been taking place this week in Las Vegas. You have probably been reading in the general interest media and tech sites about many of the announcements. Looking past the Hollywood stars, sports legends and musical icons appearing, there have been displays of every conceivable consumer electronic device, current and futuristic.

The consistent theme by manufacturers, developers, engineers and marketers has been "connectivity." From in-dash Internet and Smart TVs to home security systems and refrigerators, consumer electronics are moving toward a connected world. CEOs from both Verizon and AT&T spoke in presentations and were practically giddy over what future they see for mobile communication.

Knowing that technology leads to new communication platforms and new ways of communicating lead to new advertising and marketing opportunities, many marketers have been in attendance, including CMOs from AT&T Wireless, General Electric, Wal-Mart, Hyundai Motor America and Unilever.

The theme of connectivity carried over to thoughts these marketers shared in presentations...connectivity of media. Media are converging; for example, Smart TVs bring together television shows, Internet, and social media onto a single display.

The most important comment came from Keith Weed, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Unilever. He said he believes marketers must look at consumers, determine what media platforms consumers are using, and then use those media in an integrated way to deliver messages.
