Summer Travel Forecast: Bigger, Longer Vacations

The days of cutting back on summer vacation trips appear to be over, at least for now.

"It looks like it's going to be a strong summer," Sarah Gavin, a travel expert with online booking company Expedia, told CNBC. "People are starting to take bigger trips."

At Best Western hotels, actual year-over-year summertime bookings (May 23 through Sept. 2) are already up 10 percent for its U.S. hotels and up 17 percent for its Canadian properties.

In addition, travelers are planning longer trips. The Best Western summer bookings show a 14 percent increase in overall room nights. Best Western has more than 2,200 hotels in North America, ranging from midscale- to upscale-style properties.

Regarding who will be taking vacations, a 2013 GfK MRI study of adults 18+ who indicated they would be "very likely" to take a trip within the continental U.S. or Hawaii in the coming year broke down the travelers by age group: 18-24, 11.2%; 25-34, 17.7%; 35-44, 19.0%; 45-54, 19.4%; 55-64, 17.3%; 65+, 15.4%.
