What Stations Are Doing: Federated Media Adds Gaming Feature to Station Apps
To entice listeners to spend more time with its apps and create new money-making opportunities, Federated Media is putting play before work.
Partnering with mobile app gaming specialist ChickenBrick Studios, the company has launched new Android apps for its "Bear"-branded Indiana rockers: WBYR, Ft. Wayne and WRBR, South Bend.
Games continue to be the most popular mobile app category, according to Nielsen. "It's a radio app that's based off a content/user app," Federated Interactive chief strategy officer James Derby says. "It allows us to get in closer touch with our customers and give them some other reasons to spend time with our app, other than just streaming our radio stations."
The app opens additional revenue opportunities. For instance, Federated can place brand logos within the game and sell clients into its rewards program. The app also works as an email database builder and collects information from those trying to achieve a top score on a game.
"We can give away prizes or team up with clients to give away items to listeners through the gaming function on the app itself," Derby says.
Another dozen Federated stations will launch similarly upgraded Android apps within the next four weeks. The new apps also add "share" functionality to content features.
