What Stations Are Doing: WIL's 'Team Breadhead' Joins Komen Race for the Cure

The annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure takes place on Saturday, 6/23, in Downtown St. Louis, and Hubbard Broadcasting's 92.3 WIL's "Team Breadhead" will be back again this year to raise awareness and help stamp out breast cancer.

The Komen St. Louis event is the country's leading Race for the Cure. The 2011 event drew more than 64,000 participants and raised more than $3.1 million. This year, the 2012 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure is expected to draw many more participants and raise even more money for breast cancer screening, treatment, education and research. The event includes the 5K Run/Walk, along with a 1-mile Fun Walk and the "Sleep In For A Cure" option.

In 2011, "Team Breadhead" smashed their previous numbers and set a national record with over 7,600 team members who raised more than $211,000 for The St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

This year, the radio station has a major record to defend, and 92.3 WIL will be counting on their listeners to help them break their previous record for the largest team in Race for the Cure history. Since "Team Breadhead's" inception in 2005, just under $1 million has been raised by members in support of this local event.

This year, 92.3 WIL is partnering with Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Sheen Vein Institute, The Bedroom Store and Three French Hens to build what they hope to be once again the biggest team in Komen history to help come up with a cure to finally end breast cancer forever. Other sponsors of "Team Breadhead" include Bandana's Bar-B-Q, Sun Drop/Sunkist Soda, GCS Federal Credit Union and The BANK of Edwardsville.

"Team Breadhead" participants, led by WIL Morning Show host Cornbread, will be wearing matching team T-shirts.

The "Team Breadhead" movement began in 2005 when Cornbread arrived in St. Louis and 92.3 WIL-FM, after having supported the Race for the Cure in Wichita, Kansas prior to his move to St. Louis. That first year of "Team Breadhead," 1,800 people signed up to walk with Cornbread. Since 2007, "Team Breadhead" has fielded the largest team each year for the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure.

92.3 WIL will sponsor in-person signup opportunities during the month of May at various businesses around the St. Louis metro area.
