Walk-In Medical Clinics Are Expanding to Meet New Healthcare Demands

Retail walk-in clinics are still a relatively new addition to the healthcare industry, having only been around since 2000. But after several years of slow growth that can be traced to the recession and its aftermath, they are in an expansion mode again.

Several trends are driving the migration of health care into retail stores -- including pharmacies, big-box stores and grocery stores -- and some of those trends will be accelerated by the Affordable Care Act.

How You Can Make Money:
According to Merchant Medicine, a firm that tracks the retail clinic and urgent care business, there are more than 1,600 retail clinics in the U.S. as of this month, a number that is expected to double in the next few years. CVS is the largest player in the field, with more than 800 MinuteClinic locations, while Walgreens has opened more than 400 of its branded HealthCare Clinics.

As far as a potential advertising audience is concerned, based on research by the Harvard Medical School, the typical patient at a retail clinic is a young adult -- between 18 and 44 -- without a regular primary care physician. CVS says about half of its MinuteClinic patients report not having a primary care provider. A 2014 Medill Reports study found that 44% of visits to these clinics occur after normal office hours.
