Which Consumer Electronics Sold Best on Black Friday?
Portable MP3 players, video game consoles and accessories, and computers including notebooks and tablets were among the most popular electronics shoppers purchased this weekend, according to interim results from the Consumer Electronics Assn.'s Black Friday Survey. But despite the buzz surrounding stereo movies, the interim figures suggest that less than 5% of holiday shoppers bought 3DTVs.
"Our interim results showed that Internet-connected TVs had greater traction than 3DTVs," Shawn DuBravac, CEA's chief economist and director of research, told The Hollywood Reporter. "We asked specifically about 3DTV. There was interest, but relative to some of the other categories, it was pretty low on the list."
Fifty-eight percent of Friday's shoppers bought some type of consumer electronic product, second only to clothing, CEA reported. This is up slightly from last year's Thanksgiving survey, when CEA found that 54% of Americans purchased CE products.
In the area of packaged media, CEA reported that interim figures suggest that roughly 47% of holiday shoppers bought DVD or Blu-Ray Discs (which were combined in a single survey category).
CEA didn't ask survey participants about specific brands, but of the top-selling categories, DuBravac suggested that iPads and iPods were likely high on shopping lists. "The MP3 market is dominated by iPods," he said. "And the iPad right now has 95% market share in the tablet category."
Citing recent releases of Kinect for Xbox and PlayStation Move, DuBravac suggested that these motion-based controllers were the "probable drivers" of the video game consoles and accessories category.
Following the aforementioned top categories, the next biggest were digital cameras and televisions.
The interim findings are the results of a Caravan telephone survey, consisting of 568 adults, 283 men and 285 women 18 years of age and older, living in the continental United States.
