Brand's Stability is a Concern for Vehicle Shoppers
Keywords: Autos-New Domestic | Autos-New Imported

Nearly one in five new-vehicle buyers who avoid a particular vehicle model cite their concern over the future of the brand as a reason for avoidance, according to the recently-released J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Avoider Study.

The study, now in its seventh year, examines the reasons consumers fail to consider or avoid particular models when shopping for new vehicles. While the top three avoidance reasons in 2009 -- styling, price and perceived reliability -- remain unchanged from 2008, concern over the future of the brand is the fourth-most-frequently mentioned reason for avoiding a particular model. Included in the study for the first time, this reason was mentioned by 18 percent of avoiders.

Forecast: Small-Car Flood to Swamp Residuals
Keywords: Vehicles-Used

If you want a vehicle that will hold its value, buy a big SUV rather than a small car, the experts at Kelley Blue Book say.

Automakers, under pressure to meet tighter fuel economy rules, are about to flood the market with so many small, fuel-efficient vehicles that the residuals of those vehicles will fall, predicts Eric Ibara, director of residual consulting for Kelley Blue Book.

Daily Sales Tip: Auto Dealers Play 'Beat the Clock'

December is the best month to get a discount on a new car or truck, and during the final few days of the year the deals can get even better, according to Edmunds.com.

"Many automakers are stuck with lots of 2009 models as we are about to close out the year, so the incentives are especially aggressive," observed Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell. "Ironically, that forces heavy discounts on many 2010 models in order to keep their prices competitive in the marketplace."

Edmunds.com determined in which months and on which days consumers negotiated the biggest discounts off sticker price. Highlights of that analysis showed the following:

* The biggest discounts occurred most frequently in December, March and January, in that order.
* Consumers do not tend to get particularly good deals in April.
* Fridays tend to be the worst days for deals at the auto dealership, while Saturdays are the best.
