Families Preparing to Treat Mom on Her Special Day

After splurging on tablets and smartphones, beauty supplies, apparel and jewelry for mom last year, consumers this year will celebrate Mother's Day keeping practicality in mind.

According to the National Retail Foundation's 2014 Mother's Day Spending Survey, conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, Americans will spend an average of $162.94 on mom this year, down from a survey high of $168.94 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $19.9 billion.

Hotel Guests Are Bringing Their Appetites When Traveling

Plush bedding, fancy lobbies, and extras like pools and gyms are all great, but it turns out that the number one thing travelers care about when staying in a hotel is free breakfast. surveyed approximately 1,000 travelers, and found that the most important hotel amenity travelers want is complimentary breakfast. A hotel restaurant was ranked as the second-most important amenity, showing that there is a growing emphasis on hotel dining.

Daily Sales Tip: Obtaining Convincing Testimonials

In my workshops, I tell attendees that there are two good times to ask for testimonials:

1. When a customer compliments you. After thanking them, ask if you can write it up for their signature. Most people will consent. Customers don't usually do a very good job of writing testimonials, so you have to help them. They also tend to forget, so this method helps remind them. You can say something like: "I know you are busy, so let me write something up and send it to you for your signature."

Need some compliments in a hurry? Get on the phone and call some of your best customers to see how things are going. Ask if they were happy with their last order. Then listen.

2. At the end of a job. This is when your customers should be happiest and the great results or service you provided is still fresh in their minds. Again, probe by asking enough specific questions to develop a compelling endorsement.
