Smaller Restaurant Chains See Gains in Customer Satisfaction
Small restaurant chains have made gains in customer satisfaction over last year, while most of the largest chains have lost ground, according to the latest restaurant report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).

The ACSI revealed that customer satisfaction for smaller full-service restaurant chains rose 2.5%, to a score of 83 out of 100, while limited-service restaurants remained at 80 for a third straight year. However, the largest full-service chains experienced declines in customer satisfaction.

Chicken Has Its Sights Set on the Hamburger
The venerable hamburger is finally getting some competition as America's fast-food favorite. Coming on strong is chicken with its various fried and grilled menu options, including sandwiches, nuggets, drumsticks, etc.

For the first time in a century, chicken consumption surpassed beef in 2013, according to the USDA, thanks in part to skyrocketing beef prices. And fast-food restaurants specializing in chicken are benefitting.

Americans Name Their Favorite Quick-Service Restaurants, According to New Survey
Papa Murphy's, Qdoba, Firehouse Subs and Raising Cane's emerged as the big winners in Market Force Information's nationwide study of Americans' favorite quick-service food chains.

The new survey polled more than 6,100 consumers, asking them to name their favorite restaurants in four popular categories: Pizza, Mexican fare, Sandwiches and Chicken. The study examined why customers prefer one restaurant over another, based on factors such as service, food quality, atmosphere and value.

Food Chains Offer Smartphone Payments, But New Credit Cards May Continue Dominance
Mobile developers are saying: "Move over plastic," hoping the smartphone will be the new way to pay for your meal at several food chains who are using, or at least testing, electronic payments.

McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, and Subway are among quick-serve restaurants that are trying to make paying as "quick" as their service. Some of the restaurants are simply using GoogleWallet, others are developing their own apps.

Restaurants Eye the Potential of Variable Menu Pricing
Restaurant operators are exploring the concept of variable menu pricing -- at different times of the day or different days of the week -- as a way of generating additional traffic.

While speaking at last week's Women's Foodservice Forum, Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the National Restaurant Association's information services division, noted that this form of "yield management" is on the verge of being utilized in the restaurant business.

Sales Growth Slows for Largest Restaurant Chains in 2013
New research from Technomic Inc. shows that the 500 largest U.S. restaurant chains registered a 3.5% increase in sales for 2013, which is down from a 4.9% revenue gain the previous year.

The foodservice consultancy found that U.S. systemwide sales for the top 500 chains grew to an estimated $264 billion in 2013, up more than $8.8 billion from 2012.

Lent Prompts Spike in Restaurant Seafood Sales
This is a time for increased seafood sales in the restaurant industry thanks to Lent, the 40-day period before Easter that began on March 5.

"It's a significant business opportunity, I think, for all chains," said Brad Haley, chief marketing officer of CKE, Inc., the parent company of quick-service restaurants Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, which is offering fish specials for the season.

Taco Bell Takes On The Breakfast Experience As Part Of Their ‘Liv Mas’ Platform

Taco Bell is entering the “Breakfast Wars” on March 27 with a massive nationwide campaign. To complement the new menu, Taco Bell is launching its biggest marketing campaign in history. The menu features 13 new offerings, including the A.M. Crunchwrap and the Waffle Taco, a waffle wrapped around a sausage patty or bacon, with scrambled eggs and cheese and served with a side of syrup. Rainforest-Certified coffee will also be served.
