Accessory dwelling units gain traction but do little to help housing crisis

California leads the U.S. in accessory dwelling unit construction with nearly 23K units built in 2023, but most projects are high-end, offering little relief for housing affordability. Other states adopting similar mandates have yet to match this growth.
