Talent = Growth
The best technology in the world is only as good as the talent or people implementing it. Rishad Tobaccowala, author of Restoring the Soul of Business, wrote a recent article: It Takes Two to Transform: Embracing Tech. Upgrading Talent. The article says companies that recognize that talent equals growth and leaders who rethink their talent strategy, culture and training opportunities will be better positioned to attract new talent and upgrade their current people. “Companies want to grow. But so does talent. And if talent grows, the company grows.”
Tobaccowala shares six types of growth people want:
1. Compensation: Talent wishes to be paid fairly and to see their total compensation increase as their impact and skill sets and contributions grow.
2. Recognition: Every individual wants to be recognized for their work.
3. Autonomy: One cannot learn and grow if every step is micromanaged.
4. Skills: Today, the half-life of many technical skills and some soft skills erode and need to be continuously rebuilt.
5. Purpose: A critical factor in joining and staying in a company is a growing belief in the purpose and value of a company.
6. Relationships/connections: Growing a network of mentors, colleagues and others over time is a key to career success and happiness.
