The Technomic Top 500: Another Tough Year for Chain Restaurants
Sales among the Top 500 restaurant chains grew just 3% in 2025 to $451.5 billion, marking one of the weakest growth years outside the pandemic, as inflation, softer consumer confidence and shifting dining habits pressured much of the industry - even while categories like chicken, coffee, beverages and snacks outperformed.
This uneven performance highlights a more selective consumer environment, creating momentum for restaurants and foodservice brands that can clearly communicate value, convenience and differentiated experiences - particularly in fast-growing segments tied to beverages, snacks and specialty offerings.
