The Grocery Habits of Higher-Income Americans

Higher-income Americans shop differently than other consumers, with Costco emerging as their most distinctive grocery destination. According to YouGov, 11% of higher-income shoppers identify Costco as their primary grocery retailer versus 5% of middle- and lower-income shoppers. They also shop more frequently, with 34% making grocery trips several times a week, and spend significantly more, as 51% report household grocery spending exceeding $150 per week compared with 28% of other consumers.

These findings highlight how affluent shoppers prioritize both value and volume, creating opportunities for grocery retailers, warehouse clubs, premium food brands and household product manufacturers that can appeal to consumers willing to spend more for convenience, quality and bulk purchasing options.
