The Rise of the ‘Halfbacks’: Retirees Who Moved to Florida Are Now Fleeing It

A growing number of retirees are leaving Florida and relocating closer to their original hometowns or family members, a trend known as “halfbacking.” According to Realtor.com, factors such as rising housing costs, escalating insurance premiums, increasing healthcare needs and a desire to be closer to children and grandchildren are prompting many retirees to reconsider where they spend their retirement years.

This shift highlights how affordability and family connections are becoming increasingly important drivers of relocation decisions, creating opportunities for healthcare providers, financial services firms, senior housing communities, home services and local businesses in markets attracting older adults seeking both support networks and a lower cost of living.
