Tip Culture is More Confusing Than Ever. Here’s How Much People are Actually Tipping for a Meal in 2026

Toast's latest restaurant data shows tipping expectations have largely stabilized after years of "tip creep." The average tip at full-service restaurants is 19.3%, while quick-service restaurants average 15.8%. Takeout orders receive the lowest gratuities at 13.7%, reflecting consumers' tendency to reserve larger tips for experiences involving greater personal service. The research also found that loyal customers are more likely to tip above average at restaurants they visit regularly.

These findings suggest consumers continue to distinguish between service levels when deciding how much to tip, reinforcing the value of personalized customer experiences and loyalty. This creates opportunities for restaurants, hospitality businesses and foodservice operators that can strengthen guest relationships, encourage repeat visits and deliver service that consumers perceive as worth rewarding.
