U.S. Adults' Ability to Afford Healthcare at a Five-Year Low

Gallup's latest Healthcare Affordability Index found that, for the first time since tracking began in 2021, fewer than half of U.S. adults (49%) are considered "cost secure," meaning they can consistently afford quality healthcare and prescription medications. The study estimates that 2.8 million more Americans lost that status between 2024 and 2025, with affordability declining across nearly every demographic group, particularly among younger adults, Black and Hispanic Americans and those managing chronic health conditions.

These findings underscore the growing financial strain healthcare costs are placing on households, creating implications for healthcare providers, hospitals, insurance companies, pharmacies, financial services and wellness organizations that can help consumers navigate rising costs while improving access, affordability and long-term health outcomes.
