Decoding Large Household Appliance Purchases: How Motivations Shift Across Generations



Price is the top priority for Americans purchasing major appliances, with 85% citing it as the most important factor regardless of generation. YouGov also found that purchase motivations shift by age: older consumers place greater importance on brand reputation and retailer service, while younger shoppers are more likely to value product design and aesthetics. Nearly half of Americans also rely on consumer reviews when making appliance-buying decisions.

These findings reinforce that major appliance purchases are driven by both value and trust, creating opportunities for appliance retailers, home improvement stores, manufacturers and financing providers that can tailor messaging around affordability, reliability and service to different generations while helping consumers make confident purchase decisions.
