Scam Victims Report Billions Lost and Harm to Mental Health

A new Gallup report found that an estimated 15 million Americans were personally scammed in 2025, contributing to an estimated $68 billion in financial losses. Beyond the monetary impact, scams are taking a significant emotional toll: 73% of victims reported negative effects on their mental health or wellbeing and nearly one in four Americans say they have been scammed at some point during adulthood. Lower-income households and those without a bachelor's degree were among the groups most likely to be victimized.

These findings reinforce that fraud has become both a financial and trust issue, creating opportunities for banks, credit unions, insurance companies, healthcare organizations and cybersecurity providers to educate consumers, strengthen fraud prevention efforts and position themselves as trusted resources in protecting personal and financial information.
