Are Staycations the Hottest Trend of Summer 2026? New Survey Reveals Why People Downgrade or Cancel Altogether

Omnisend's Summer Travel Trends 2026 survey found that nearly half of consumers (47%) have canceled, shortened or downgraded their summer vacation plans because of higher costs, with gas prices cited as the leading reason by 46% of Americans. Rather than eliminating discretionary spending altogether, many consumers are redirecting those travel dollars toward groceries, household essentials and smaller indulgences, with 68% saying they'll treat themselves to "little treats" instead of a major vacation.

These findings suggest consumers are reallocating—not eliminating—their discretionary budgets, creating opportunities for restaurants, retailers, entertainment venues, convenience stores and local attractions to position themselves as affordable ways to enjoy the summer close to home. Businesses that emphasize value, convenience and memorable local experiences may be well positioned to capture spending that would have otherwise gone toward travel.
