What Factors do Americans Consider When Choosing Medical Treatments?

When evaluating medical treatment options, Americans place the greatest importance on side effects (61%) and insurance coverage (60%), according to YouGov. Other key considerations include a treatment's effectiveness, a physician's recommendation and out-of-pocket costs. The study also found generational differences: Baby Boomers are more likely to prioritize side effects, insurance coverage and physician reputation, while Gen Z places greater emphasis on prescription price and the reputation of the medical center.

These findings reinforce that healthcare decisions are driven by a combination of clinical outcomes and financial realities, creating opportunities for hospitals, healthcare providers, insurance companies, pharmaceutical brands and medical practices that can clearly communicate treatment benefits, affordability and trust while addressing the priorities of different patient segments.
