Building the Next Generation of Radio and Audio Talent

Building the Next Generation of Radio and Audio Talent The future of radio and audio depends on attracting and developing new talent. This spring, college-age students from across the country received a firsthand look at careers in broadcasting through RAB's 2026 Media Career Academies program series.

Conducted in partnership with the Georgia Association of Broadcasters (GAB), GAB Education Foundation, Illinois Broadcasters Foundation (IBF) and the Kellar Family Foundation, the academies provided immersive, hands-on experiences designed to introduce participants to the many opportunities available across radio, audio and media.

The 2026 series included the GAB Media Career Academy at the University of Georgia in Athens, the IBF Media Career Academy in Bloomington, Illinois, and the Kellar Media Career Academy at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Part of the National Radio Talent System (NRTS), a division of RAB, the academies connected students with broadcasters, media executives and industry professionals who shared insights into today's evolving media landscape. Through presentations, discussions and interactive learning experiences, participants explored careers in programming, sales, marketing, content creation and management.

"The Media Career Academies are designed to help students see the breadth of opportunities that exist across broadcasting and audio," said Mike Hulvey, president and CEO of RAB. "For many participants, these programs provide their first meaningful exposure to the business and introduce them to career paths they may not have previously considered."

The impact extends beyond the classroom. "One of the most impactful elements of these academies is the opportunity for students to connect directly with industry professionals and experience firsthand the innovation, creativity and collaboration that define broadcasting today," said Randy Gravley, president of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. "The GAB Media Career Academy plays an important role in helping us cultivate future broadcasters in Georgia."

The academies are part of NRTS, the industry's premier student training initiative and the first program of its kind dedicated to discovering and preparing the next generation of broadcasters. Since 2007, NRTS has inspired more than 800 students through nearly 55 programs nationwide, helping connect aspiring media professionals with industry leaders and career opportunities.

As radio continues to evolve across broadcast, streaming, podcasting and digital platforms, programs like the Media Career Academies play a vital role in building a pipeline of future talent and ensuring a strong future for the industry.
