Vulnerability is SCARY!
It was a room full of people in Kearney, Nebraska. They gathered for one purpose – to become better leaders. That journey involved learning new concepts and, more importantly, discussing challenges and fears. Steven (name changed for privacy) raised his hand and shared his story. As he started speaking, tears welled up in his eyes. He caught himself, regained his composure and said, "I'm sorry, that felt too raw."
What happened next was magical. Everyone in the room started clapping in support. Steven's vulnerability touched the hearts of total strangers, many of whom may have had the same fears but were afraid to share. Steven opened the door. His vulnerability was not weakness; it was strength and an opening for others to feel safe.
Are you afraid some days? Fearful you don't know what you're doing? Terrified of the economy? Scared for our industry? You're not alone. The lesson is this: hiding those fears, suppressing them or being embarrassed by them will cause isolation and loneliness and will not help you have the confidence and belief in yourself that you deserve.
Please hear this and hear it loudly: Vulnerability is NOT weakness. It's strength.
Here are three things to consider the next time you feel afraid to be vulnerable:
Vulnerability Builds Trust and Authentic Connections - Vulnerability builds trust in professional relationships. When leaders and employees openly share their challenges, uncertainties and mistakes, it signals authenticity and courage, not weakness.
Vulnerability Drives Growth, Innovation and Engagement - By embracing vulnerability, professionals and leaders create a culture where taking risks, sharing new ideas and learning from failure are normalized.
Vulnerability Cultivates Self-Awareness, Empathy and Inner Peace - Expressing vulnerability allows individuals to become more self-aware, recognizing their emotions, limitations and motivations. This self-awareness is the gateway to empathy, as understanding one's struggles makes it easier to relate to and support others.
It's my honor to be able to facilitate our Leadership Masterclass. Yes, we talk about business concepts, but in today's world, it's often what we refer to as the "softer skills" that are more impactful. Vulnerability is not just helpful or welcome in professional life—it is the only sustainable path to trust, growth and peace, both within us and across our organizations.
With the help of state associations, it's a privilege to bring the Leadership MasterClass close to you. Next week – Alabama. Contact your state association director and see if they plan on the Leadership Masterclass in your state. It would be an honor to walk this journey with you.
