Are Rising Gas Prices Making Electric Vehicles More Appealing to U.S. Automobile Buyers?
YouGov's latest CategoryView research found that rising gasoline prices briefly boosted interest in electric vehicles among Americans planning to purchase a vehicle within the next year. The share expecting their next vehicle to be an EV increased from 8% in February to 15% in April, before easing to 11% in May, suggesting fuel prices can influence consideration but may not sustain long-term demand. The biggest obstacles remain practical concerns rather than fuel costs: 47% cite driving range, 46% battery safety and longevity, 43% charging availability, 43% repair and maintenance costs, and 37% vehicle purchase price as reasons for not choosing an EV.
The findings suggest that while higher gas prices can encourage consumers to consider electric vehicles, affordability and confidence in the ownership experience remain the biggest hurdles. Automakers, dealerships, charging providers, utilities and financial institutions have an opportunity to address these concerns by emphasizing reliability, charging infrastructure, total cost of ownership and financing options.
