Charting the Rise of the Pre-Owned Boat Market
The pre-owned boat market is becoming increasingly attractive as higher interest rates, rising maintenance costs and elevated prices for new boats drive consumers to seek greater value. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, 858,798 pre-owned boats changed hands in 2024, representing more than three-quarters of all boat transactions. Buyers are also becoming more informed and selective, comparing financing, incentives and long-term ownership costs rather than simply choosing between new and used boats. Industry experts expect inventory to continue growing as more boats purchased during the pandemic enter the resale market, creating greater selection and competitive pricing for consumers.
The findings highlight a broader shift toward value-driven purchasing across recreational industries. Boat dealers, marinas, lenders, insurers, marine service providers and outdoor recreation businesses have an opportunity to attract budget-conscious buyers by emphasizing certified pre-owned programs, transparent pricing, financing options and long-term value throughout the ownership experience.
