What Do Americans Think About Language Learning in U.S. Schools?

A new Pew Research Center survey found that 79% of Americans believe it is at least somewhat important for children growing up in the U.S. to learn a language other than English, including 40% who say it is extremely or very important. More than half (53%) believe U.S. schools should offer Spanish classes, making it the most desired language, while Mandarin Chinese ranks second. The research also found support for language learning is strongest among younger adults, urban residents, immigrants and those with higher levels of education.

The findings highlight growing recognition that multilingual skills have educational, cultural and workforce value. Schools, colleges, language education providers, employers, travel companies and multicultural businesses have opportunities to promote language learning as a way to prepare students and employees for an increasingly connected economy while helping organizations better serve diverse communities.
