Which Technologies Do Americans Miss — And Which Are They Glad To Be Rid Of?

A new YouGov survey found that while Americans have largely embraced newer technology, many remain nostalgic for certain devices they no longer use. Among former users, 42% miss vinyl record players and want to use them again, followed by digital cameras (36%), CD players (29%) and DVD players (29%). In contrast, few want to revisit older technologies such as dial-up internet (4%), floppy disks (5%) or fax machines (10%), with majorities saying they're glad those technologies are gone. The findings illustrate that consumers value experiences and quality associated with some legacy technologies, while happily leaving behind outdated conveniences.

The research suggests nostalgia remains a powerful driver of consumer interest. Retailers, consumer electronics brands, entertainment companies and marketers can capitalize on renewed interest in retro products and experiences while continuing to emphasize the convenience and innovation of modern technology.
