Tip Survey: 4 In 10 Americans Shun Some Businesses Over Tip Prompts
Americans are feeling the effects of expanding tip culture, with 62% saying they are asked to tip in more situations than they were two years ago. The survey found 38% have a negative view of tipping, half view pre-entered tip options on payment screens negatively and 66% feel pressured when an employee can see the tipping screen. Most notably, 40% say they avoid certain businesses at least occasionally specifically because of tip prompts.
The findings are especially relevant to businesses where tipping is part of the customer experience. Sellers can approach restaurants, coffee shops, salons, spas, food delivery services, hotels and other service businesses about messaging that emphasizes value and customer service, particularly since 66% say service quality is the biggest factor influencing how much they tip. Helping businesses communicate the experience and service they provide may be increasingly important as consumers become more sensitive to tipping expectations.
