Are Some Toys Only For Boys Or Only For Girls?
More Americans believe boys and girls should grow up playing with the same toys and activities than believe they should have different ones, 52% versus 35%. Building blocks, board games, science kits, musical instruments, arts and crafts kits and stuffed animals are overwhelmingly viewed as appropriate for both boys and girls. Views become more divided with traditionally gendered toys: 67% say play kitchens are for both, while baby dolls are nearly evenly split between both genders (46%) and girls only (49%).
The findings offer useful insight as retailers and family-focused businesses plan product selection, promotions and holiday marketing. Sellers can approach toy stores, department and discount retailers, bookstores, hobby and craft stores, children’s museums, educational businesses and family entertainment venues with campaigns that appeal to parents through children’s interests and experiences rather than relying solely on traditional gender-based marketing.
