More Young Americans Vote, But Few Feel Heard

Young Americans are showing greater interest in civic participation, with voting intent among those eligible to vote in state elections up 15 percentage points since 2024. The UNICEF USA Youth Poll of 3,204 people ages 14 to 22 found 82% believe people their age can make a difference, yet only 30% feel included in decisions that affect them. Affordability is a major concern, with 61% citing cost of living as a top issue facing the country, while 62% believe local leaders are invested in their future compared with 42% who say the same about federal leaders.

The findings provide useful insights for political campaigns, candidates, issue advertisers, advocacy organizations and civic groups seeking to communicate with younger audiences. The research suggests messages addressing affordability and other issues young people identify as important, along with communication that demonstrates listening and engagement, may be especially relevant when reaching this age group.
