U.S. Summer Travel 2026: What People Planned Vs. What Actually Happened
Just over half (54%) of U.S. adults entered summer 2026 either planning or considering a leisure trip, and 51% ultimately traveled in some form. While 28% took roughly the trip they originally planned, 11% took a different trip and 12% chose a local trip or staycation. Cost was the biggest influence on travel decisions, cited by 53%, and 22% ultimately spent more on summer leisure travel than they expected.
The results point to continued travel demand, but also show that affordability can determine where and how consumers travel. Sellers can approach hotels and resorts, attractions, restaurants, tourism organizations, travel agencies, airlines, car rental companies and local entertainment businesses with campaigns emphasizing value, packages, special offers and affordable experiences, including options closer to home.
