Computer Sector Leads Drops In Industry Ratings

Americans’ positive ratings of several major industries have declined over the past year, led by the computer industry, which fell 11 percentage points to a record-low 48%. Positive views of electric and gas utilities dropped seven points to 33%, farming and agriculture fell six points to 54% and oil and gas declined five points to 30%. Even with its decline, farming and agriculture remains the highest-rated industry, followed by restaurants at 51%, and they are the only two sectors viewed positively by a majority of Americans.

The findings underscore the importance of reputation, trust and communicating value, particularly for industries facing declining public perceptions. Sellers can approach technology companies, utilities, agricultural businesses, oil and gas companies, restaurants, banks, health care providers and other locally represented industries with campaigns that highlight community involvement, customer benefits, expertise and the people behind the business.
