How Urban, Suburban And Rural Americans Engage In Society Mail
Americans living in urban, suburban and rural communities participate in civic and community life at broadly similar rates, but how they engage differs. Suburban residents are more likely to be “Connectors,” people who volunteer, donate and participate in groups or clubs, at 34% compared with 23% of urban and 30% of rural residents. Urban residents are more likely to be “Spectators,” who primarily engage by consuming news, while the most highly engaged “Mobilizers” account for roughly 9% to 10% of adults across all three community types. The underlying surveys were conducted in 2025.
The findings reinforce the importance of understanding how consumers connect with their communities rather than treating geography alone as a predictor of engagement. Sellers can use the insights when talking with nonprofits, community organizations, financial institutions, health care providers, educational organizations, local events and other community-focused businesses, tailoring campaigns around volunteering, donations, local involvement and information depending on the audience they want to reach.
