Do Fans Actually Think Their Rituals Affect Games?
For many football fans, game-day traditions are serious business. A survey of 2,000 American football fans found that 34% believe their rituals influence the outcome of a game, while another 32% aren't sure but don't want to take any chances. Wearing lucky clothing (60%), watching games in the same location (43%) and eating the same foods or snacks (40%) are among the most popular rituals. Among self-described diehard fans, 59% have at least one game-day tradition they refuse to break.
These traditions create opportunities for restaurants, sports bars, pizzerias, grocery stores, convenience stores, sporting goods retailers, team merchandise shops and food delivery businesses. Sellers can help advertisers become part of fans' game-day routines with promotions featuring favorite foods, team apparel, watch parties and special offers that encourage repeat visits throughout football season.
