Bank of America Family Office Study: Next Generation Set To Reshape Family Offices

The next generation of wealthy families is expected to reshape how family offices invest, manage and preserve their assets, according to Bank of America's 2026 Family Office Study. Among family offices with a potential next-generation principal, 79% anticipate increasing allocations to alternative investments, while 77% expect philanthropic priorities to change. Although 83% have identified a successor, only 40% have a formal family education program and just 27% have established trust distribution policies or guiding principles. Younger generations are also expected to embrace technology and borrowing strategies, with 77% of family offices anticipating greater interest in using credit to build wealth.

As wealth transfers to younger generations, wealth management firms, private banks, financial advisors, estate planning attorneys, trust companies, investment firms, accounting firms and philanthropic advisory services can help families navigate changing priorities. Sellers can encourage these businesses to highlight succession planning, investment diversification, financial education and strategies for preserving and growing wealth across generations.
