OfferUp® Recommerce Report 2026

The U.S. recommerce market is projected to reach $246.7 billion in 2026, a 7.9% increase over last year, according to OfferUp's 2026 Recommerce Report. Eighty-one percent of shoppers say buying secondhand allows them to get what they want without paying full retail price, while 71% say economic or financial concerns have influenced their decision to buy or sell used items. Secondhand shopping is particularly popular among Gen Z, with 67% choosing used over new items most or all of the time when a suitable option is available. The market also extends well beyond clothing, with approximately 75% of secondhand spending occurring in categories such as furniture, electronics, home improvement, sporting goods and automobiles.

Consumers' growing interest in secondhand merchandise gives thrift stores, consignment shops, used furniture retailers, refurbished electronics dealers, sporting goods retailers, pawnshops and resale businesses a strong message to bring to market. Sellers can encourage these advertisers to promote affordability, quality merchandise, trade-in programs and the ability to purchase higher-end products at lower prices, particularly when reaching younger, value-conscious shoppers.
