1 In 3 Americans Have “Faked It” At Work, Addison Group Finds

Staying competitive in today's workforce is becoming increasingly challenging, with 93% of working and job-seeking Americans saying at least one aspect of building a successful career has become harder over the past five years, according to Addison Group's 2026 Skill Security Report. The report indicates that 83% took steps to remain professionally competitive during the past year, while 68% experienced at least one challenge related to keeping pace with technology. Career pressures are also affecting confidence, with 36% admitting they have exaggerated their knowledge, skills or experience to appear more capable. Meanwhile, 95% say at least one form of employer support, including professional development, advancement opportunities or clearer career guidance, would improve their confidence about the future.

As workers look to strengthen their skills and career prospects, community colleges, vocational schools, professional certification programs and workforce training providers can promote flexible learning options, technology training and credentials that support career advancement. Staffing agencies and employment services can emphasize career guidance, job placement assistance and resources that help candidates navigate changing employer expectations.
