Credit vs. Cash: How Travelers Navigate Purchases Abroad [2026 Survey]

International travelers are doing their homework before heading abroad, yet many still encounter unexpected costs and payment challenges, according to a 2026 Upgraded Points survey of 1,000 U.S. travelers and 500 travelers from other countries. Among all respondents, 68% research exchange rates before departure, 63% investigate whether they'll need cash and 61% check for foreign transaction fees. Despite those preparations, 34% have paid more than expected because of exchange rates, 29% have encountered unexpected foreign transaction fees and 26% have had a card declined. Cash remains important, with 81% carrying local currency, while only 35% feel very confident understanding exchange rates abroad.

Banks and credit card issuers can emphasize international payment features, foreign transaction fee policies and tools that help customers manage purchases abroad. Currency exchange services can highlight transparent rates, convenient access to foreign cash and advance currency planning to address travelers' concerns about unexpected costs.
