How Men And Women In The U.S. Differ In Gift-Giving Habits
Women are more likely than men to purchase gifts for a wider range of family members and friends, according to YouGov Profiles data collected from October 2025 through October 2026. More than half of women (52%) buy gifts for friends, compared with 36% of men, while men are slightly more likely to purchase gifts for spouses or significant others (52% vs. 49%). The occasion is the leading consideration when selecting gifts for both women (70%) and men (63%), followed by the relationship with the recipient and budget. Food and beverages and gift cards are the most popular gift categories for both groups, while men are somewhat more likely to purchase electronics and sporting goods.
Restaurants, specialty food retailers and gift card sellers can highlight convenient, versatile gift options for holidays and special occasions, while clothing stores, bookstores and toy retailers can develop promotions tied to birthdays, graduations and family celebrations. Electronics and sporting goods retailers may also benefit from gift-focused campaigns that emphasize popular products, practical purchases and options for different budgets.
