Nearly Half Of SMBs Don’t Have A Month’s Cash Buffer

Small business owners have less financial breathing room, according to Bluevine's 2026 Cash Flow Management Survey of 760 business owners. Forty-three percent have less than a month's worth of cash available for operating expenses, up from 39% last year, while the share with just one to two weeks of reserves increased from 14% to 20%. Financial pressures are taking a personal toll, with 42% delaying their own pay to keep their businesses running and 45% using personal funds to cover expenses. Construction and trade businesses are particularly vulnerable, with 60% citing rising fuel costs and 36% identifying late customer payments as a cash flow challenge.

With business owners struggling to maintain adequate cash reserves, banks, credit unions, commercial lenders, accounting firms, financial advisors, payroll providers, payment processing companies and business software providers can help address pressing financial needs. Sellers can encourage these advertisers to highlight cash flow management services, flexible financing, faster payment solutions and financial planning tools that help businesses manage expenses and maintain stability.
